Apple is reportedly planning to launch a redesigned iPad Pro next year in an effort to reinvigorate a stagnant tablet market. This upcoming iPad Pro will mark the first significant overhaul of the product line in five years, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
The tablet market, which includes Apple's iPad category, has been facing challenges. Sales have declined, particularly in the recent quarter where there was a 17% drop
in unit shipments. Contributing factors include the impact of the pandemic-induced surge and consumers holding onto their functional older tablets or choosing larger smartphones instead.Apple's Role in the Market Situation
Apple's choices have also played a role in the current situation. Updates to the iPad have been relatively minor, leading to a lineup that's confusing due to the presence of numerous models and generations. Additionally, improvements to Apple's Mac lineup have made Macs more durable and cost-effective, which has reduced the necessity for iPads in certain scenarios. Moreover, the iPad's software lacks certain functionalities comparable to those found in Macs.
Despite these challenges, Apple remains the market leader, accounting for 37% of tablet shipments in the last quarter. While Apple's sales have decreased, they still outperform those of most competitors. Xiaomi experienced some growth, albeit on a smaller scale compared to Apple.
The Anticipated iPad Pro Redesign
According to Mark Gurman, the next iPad Pro models, internally codenamed J717, J718, J720, and J721, will be equipped with the next-generation M3 chip and OLED displays similar to those used in iPhones since 2017. These OLED displays offer improved clarity, brightness, and color accuracy.
This redesigned iPad Pro, slated to be launched next year, could potentially bring about a positive change in the market. It will feature the M3 chip and OLED displays, delivering a more vibrant and accurate visual experience.
Available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, the larger model is expected to feature a redesigned Magic Keyboard with a larger trackpad, resembling a laptop.
Timeline for the New iPad Pro Release
However, these new iPad Pro models are not expected to be part of Apple's upcoming major event, which will primarily focus on unveiling new iPhones and Apple Watches. The release of the revamped iPad Pro is anticipated in the spring or early summer. Minor updates might also be introduced to other iPad models before the new iPad Pro's launch, according to insights provided by Mark Gurman.
